Glowing fishes

GloFish is the name of genetically modified fluorescent zebrafishes. Basically they can be red, orange, yellow or green, but there are a few more developments with other types of fluorescent protein expressions. They are healthy and normal in all other aspects. The price of one piece is about 5 dollars.

Girl versus Tief

Here I found another very funny video, amazing suplex. I'd like it to be true, which is highly probable if I can judge from the general aspect of the record. The thief assaulted the wrong girl :).

The Starchild skull

The Starchild skull is a real existing object and target of scientific studies. It is very unusual and abnormal human-like skull which was found in Mexico. Its origin and nature are contested by scientists and paranormal enthusiasts. The volume of the interior, where the brain lies is about 1600 cubic centimetres, which is 400 cc more than the brain's volume of an adult human with comparable size. There is an overload of collagen in it, much more than it is usual for the human bones and also there are no frontal sinuses. The carbon 14 tests gave a result of 900 years ± 40 years since death. Also it have other features unknown in others humans or animal species. There are not known diseases or causes that can cause similar shape and structure of a human cranium.

Mind the frog

The Golden Poison Frog (Phyllobates terribilis) found in the South America's jungles has poison which contains the most potent toxin produced by an animal, called Batrachotoxin, with LD50 1 to 2 µg/kg. The lethal dose for human in the blood stream is approximately 100 micrograms or weight, which is the equivalent of two grains of fine table salt. A wild adult specimen has up to 2 milligrams of the toxin, or 50 times the lethal dose for the humans. Currently there is no effective antidote and treatment for batrachotoxin poisoning doesn't exist. Shot with poison darts made from batrachotoxin provoke nerve paralysis almost instantaneous. The poison preserve quality even dried up for nearly 2 years. However in captivity this frog will lose the poison and will become harmless.

The Hexagon on Saturn

It is an old news, but it still impresses me. This hexagon (or rather hexagonal formation) lies on the north pole of the planet Saturn and its about 25,000 kilometres (15,000 miles) across. Nearly four Earths could fit inside it.
"This is a very strange feature, lying in a precise geometric fashion with six nearly equally straight sides," said Kevin Baines, atmospheric expert and member of Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
There are some explanations involving possible standing wave but I think it doesn't look convincing enough. Here is an example.

Glowing mice

As an result of gene engineering experiment were to created fluorescent green mice. The gene which produces the glowing protein is from a species of jellyfish. These mice are really neat looking creatures and I'd like to buy couple of them.

Also in other case create in China scientists managed to expressed red fluorescent protein.

As well it is possible to make only the eyes glow. I bet here are a lot of people that will want to do the same with themselves :). If only it was possible to do that with humans ...

Klerksdorp Spheres

The Klerksdorp Spheres are strange objects found and collected in South Africa's 2.7-3.0 billion years mineral deposits by miners. They are between 5 and 100 mm in diameter and have variable spherical or disc shape. They can have also grooves on the equator. They are often claimed to be evidence of technology of very prehistoric non-human civilizations, remainder of extraterrestrials or similar believes. Below I am listing some sources with pictures and different explanations.

Most venomous snake

The Inland Taipan from Australia is considered to be the world's most venomous land snake. It has LD50 of 0.025 mg/kg. The venom contained in a single bite is enough to kill 100 humans. Compare this with some other snakes here.

The most poisonous mushroom

The Death Cap is considered to be the most poisonous mushroom in the world. It is estimated that half a cap (30 grams) is enough to kill a human. Cooking, boiling, freezing, drying or any other process don't reduce the toxicity. It is widely distributed on all continents except of Antarctica.

May be we'll have real mammoths someday

In Yamal, Russia (Ямал, Россия), in May, this year, the reindeer herder Yurii Hudii (Юрий Худий) discovered the best preserved specimen of mammoth. The carcass is of a 6 months old female, who died about 10 000 years ago. Soon it'll be send to Jikei University, for an exam. This will recover the hope for the recreation of live mammoths. The proposed technology is, when the scientists have the reconstructed DNA of the mammoth, to have it implanted of ovum of an elephant without its own DNA (cleaned ovum).

Dangerous scorpions

According to some sources the Black Fat Tail Scorpion is the most venomous scorpion, with highest LD-50 (median lethal dose) about 0.16 - 0.5 mg/kg lethal dose. It has probably highest ratio of stings to fatalities in humans.

Number two is the Deathstalker, often cited (Wikipedia) as world's most venomous or deadliest, that mean that he is may be the actual champion.

Also here are some more interesting species as the Black Spitting Thicktail Scorpion which is highly venomous too and can spry its venom up to 1 m. The Mozambique Hissing Scorpion can hiss. The Yellow Fattail Scorpion despite of a little bit lower toxicity compared with the two species on the pictures, causes far more deaths every year, because it is far more common. The Honduran Yellow-Brown Scorpion is the fastest species of scorpion.

However there are different interpretations of what means "the most venomous", because the test animals are mice and the humans may have other LD-50 for some of the toxin. Here we can see examples of the LD-50 in different animals for the same toxin.

Human 2.0

In this article from Discover Magazine we can read about successful genetic engineering experiment about creating super strong muscles in mice. The mice can run 25% longer and cover 45% more distance then ordinary mouse without training, only with genetic interference. If that works with humans we can imagine how the people will be athletes without training and these who train will be far more stronger and faster then today's athletes. Is this the gene doping?

How bright is a Supernova

Supernova 1994D in Galaxy NGC 4526. The distance is about 55 million light-years. Compare the luminosity of the galaxy core and the supernova. Only a supernova can radiate energy like billions stars.

Giant Hornets

The Asian Giant Hornet is one of the most fearsome insects ever. It is the largest hornet in the world and the most venomous insect per sting.

When the Giant Hornets attacks honey bee's hive only 30 hornets will kill all 30,000 bees in 3 hours.

Real flying saucer

Amazing project for commercially sold flying saucer for as little as 90,000$. Its called M200G Neuera, M200G Volantor or M200X (not really clear which one is on the video)

Update: Seems the project failed, however it helped move all of us an inch closer to the personal flying vehicles.

Minihorse

There really are miniature horses (often called mini horses). The name of the brown one is Thumbelina. She holds the title for the world's smallest horse in the Guinness Book of Records with her 17 inches. The minihorses are true horses, but bred to be very small.

Intelligent Design

I'm European man and for me is very strange how many people around the world support the idea about the so called intelligent design. On first place there are a lot of non-senses in the arguments against the theories of the evolution. For example recently I argued about the "converting one species in another". The arguments were full nonsense and ignorance about what is scientific method, what is the theory of evolution, what is species and what biologist discovered the last 100 years. So there are a lot of currently emerging new species and lot of transitional species. Most correct is to say that all existing species are transitional, this is the essence of the evolution theory. To make the situation more clear, on first place it will be good to read what is a  ring species and what is a species. As well I'll join in the so called "google bomb" that will help the objective skeptic mind to find more correct option, because there is too much aggressive propaganda from the creationists and the scientist very rarely are interested in obvious nonsense arguments and debates with them. Everybody is welcome to post this link to one good article in Scientific American named "15 Answers to Creationist Nonsense".

Colored chickens

This is not photoshop work but true coloured chickens for Easter. This is made with dyes injected in the eggs, before incubation. And they said that it is not harmful for them, so the result are very cute and surrealistic chickens. However, the colours fade for a couple of weeks after the chicks are hatched.
